70 mil projector12/8/2023 Any Nolan fan or film fanatic has much to appreciate if they see Oppenheimerin IMAX when it hits theaters next week. As of 8 February 2023, the results are now. The black-and-white sequences of Oppenheimerwere also shot on the first ever black-and-white IMAX film stock to preserve Nolan's desire to maintain the same visual quality as the rest of the film. Recent changes to the methodology and assumptions used in the calculations will impact the projection results. From the trailer, it looks like Nolan's effects team created practical explosions bursting with motion and color, reminiscent of visuals from Interstellar. While that doesn't mean there are no special effects at all, it does mean that the entire film started with practical shots, including the detonation of the atomic bomb itself. In Nolan's own words, the IMAX experience is uniquely suited for Oppenheimer, which famously features no CGI shots. Therefore, fans who want to see the movie as close to Nolan's vision as possible may find the IMAX experience very rewarding. The director believes the IMAX experience is the most immersive, where the screen fades away, and the film floods the audience's vision. Shooting for IMAX has shaped Nolan's framing technique while shooting his films, as he centers the action to leave room for the larger vertical image in IMAX theaters while still preserving the most important visual information for other theaters. In an interview with the Associated Press, he says the best experience for watching Oppenheimer is in IMAX. Nolan himself has championed IMAX for years.
